No Whey Campaign

The aim of this campaign is to persuade the manufacturers of processed foods etc. to remove unnecessary animal ingredients from their products.

How many times have you picked up a product which appears to be vegan and scanned through the ingredients list, only to discover to your disappointment that it contains whey powder, lactose, casein, shellac or similar dairy, egg or carcass derivatives? Frustrating, isn't it! It's even more frustrating when this happens with a product which USED to be vegan.

The No Whey Campaign aims to put pressure on food manufacturers to remove such ingredients from their foods so that they will become suitable for vegans and people with allergies. Although it would be wonderful if everything in the shops was vegan, this campaign will focus exclusively on food products which contain small amounts of animal products which make no significant difference to the quality or flavour of the food. By extending the range of products suitable for vegans, we will not only make life easier for ourselves, but will also encourage other people to turn vegan.

When Linda Mc Cartney foods were asked why they had changed many of their products so that they were no longer vegan, a spokesperson said that their company had received a very large number of enquiries from people worried about genetically modified ingredients, but only a handful from vegans. They concluded that the vegan market for their products is very small. This is a typical example of the way food manufacturers operate.

We need to make these companies listen to us. Consumer power has never been stronger and we can all play our part in this campaign. The No Whey Campaign will:

Monitor the ingredients of food products and keep a record of good brands to 'target'.

Compile a list of the addresses and phone numbers of the manufacturers and list them on this site.

Keep a record of any responses that the companies give to enquirers.

Deal with any media enquiries and actively promote this campaign to food industry magazines, as well as ethical and vegetarian/vegan publications.

What YOU can do:

Monitor the ingredients of foods and notify the campaign of any brands that you think would be good to 'target'.

Contact food manufacturers and let them know why they are losing your custom.

Keep in touch with your comments and suggestions and forward copies of any responses you receive.

This is a very winnable campaign. Get involved!
